Leaving a Legacy

With the birth of our first child about 4 months ago, leaving a legacy on the next generation has suddenly become a reality in my daily activities.  I now have a little boy depending on me not only for his survival, but also for his attitude towards Christ. It is not my job to save him, but it is my job to love him and show him Christ’s love for him and for others. By praying for him, serving him, and setting an example of love, I can leave a lasting legacy that can not only impact his time here with us, but his eternal future.

Focusing my ministry on my son does not mean I just focus on him. In order to teach him about love, selflessness, generosity, service, and mercy, I must do these things in everything, not just towards him. If I always love him, treat him kindly, and teach him about Jesus but don’t get out there and show him what that looks like in community, then my teaching is inconsistent with my actions. But if I make it a priority to be serving my community, loving those around me, giving financially, and praying for others, then he can be instilled with an attitude of outward love. If I want him to be an others-focused person, willing to be a servant, I must be an example of this.

Ultimately, leaving a legacy is the most I can do as his parent. His salvation is not dependent on me, but it is something I can and will continue to pray for. In the meantime, giving myself to serve at Fellowship White Rock is just one of the many ways I can imprint love on his heart. Whether it is working in the nursery, going door to door on Service Sundays, or just helping load up and forming relationships with friends, I am enjoying being intentional with how I spend my time influencing and shaping my son into a boy who grows up to know and love his Creator.
