My name is Peggy Lesch. My husband Jack and I have been at Fellowship for 5 years. We were members of Faith Bible Church in the Woodlands, Texas, for 40 years until moving to Dallas to be near our grandchildren. Our friends Gwen and Hack Kirkpatrick (members of FD) moved from The Woodlands to Dallas before us, and they were our first invitation to come to Fellowship. Our initial involvement came through Bob Gray’s invitation to join their Life Group. Bob and Jack were fraternity brothers at SMU (long ago) with Joel Housholder. Recently, Joel and Cindy invited us to join them in reigniting a marriage ministry in our church. We look forward to seeing what God will do. The Psalm for today’s devotional is Psalm 124, which reads,
“If it had not been the Lord who was on our side Let Israel now say,
If it had not been the Lord who was on our side,
When men rose up against us,
Then the water would have overwhelmed us,
The stream would have gone over our soul;
Then the swollen waters Would have gone over our soul.”
Have you ever felt so discouraged or desperate that the only prayer you could think of was “HELP!”? Psalm 124 reminds us that God is on our side and more than able to rescue us from the most overwhelming circumstances of life. In Hebrew 13:5b-6, Jesus Himself says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So, we boldly say: “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” A dear friend and I served on the worship team for several years, and out all the songs we sang, she shared with me that her favorite had always been “Had it not been the Lord who was on our side...” These are words straight from Psalm 124. The chorus of the song goes on to say, “Blessed be the Lord who would not give us up; blessed be the Lord for His unfailing love. The snare is broken and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of the Lord.” The Psalm ends with v8, which reads, “Our help is in the NAME of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.” Please don’t miss the description of the source of our help. Our help is in the NAME of the Lord; the MAKER of heaven and earth. Proverbs 18:20 says, “The NAME of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” And In Philippians 2, we see that Jesus came to earth, humbled Himself to point of death on a cross and that the Father exalted Him, giving Him a NAME which is above every name. At the NAME of Jesus every knee will bow... and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
The name of Jesus is Wonderful; it is STRONG; it is safe and it is above every other name. Can you even imagine a stronger, more reliable source of help than the maker of heaven, earth and EVERYTHING in it?! When your heart can only cry “HELP!”, know He hears you, and promises to be your very present help in time of need. (Psalm 46:1) Don’t wait; run to Him and He will meet you there with mercy and grace.
